No Age Limit: My Journey from Teacher to Transformative Educator

Learning never stops and the popular saying that goes, ‘You cannot teach an old dog new tricks’. seems to have been bypassed. Learning is life-long, a continuous process that requires unlearning and relearning as education evolves with changing context.

A couple of years ago, an ‘old dog’ found an exciting opportunity for professional development as a teacher. Twice, he ignored the opportunity but as fate had it, the calling was way stronger than the desire to say, ‘I am too old for these stuff’. For close to one year, he begun the amazing transformative journey of becoming a Black Belt, chewing the belts one after another. Little did he know that would change his life forever.

Hear this, from a dismissive classroom teacher to a knowledge facilitator, a 1MT Black Belt graduate, HP mentor, Global Education Ambassador for A Walk Through Education(AWTE), Country Education Ambassador for International Internship University(IIU), OPEN Alumnus, Global Schools Advocate trainee, and above all, 1Million Teachers ambassador. Now, this guy is in the field of research in education courtesy of Aga Khan University, a partner in the Black Belt content creation.

All these have found their way into a School in the heart of Nyamira County, the first and only public school to become a 1MT Anchor School in Kenya. The transformation is real. It is a song in every learner’s mouth as they explore innovative learning strategies. The sky is simply the lower limit.

This is the story of Sisa Nyakundi Ankiri, yes! That is my story. Working to empower and transform the future generation through innovative education. We are the transformation no matter the age.
